FEELING THE PULSE OF THE AUDIENCE

The paper is an attempt by a musician to blend tradition with innovation within the parameters of sur, taal, raag and expression. Structuring the presentation with various sections such as the definition of the pulse of the audience, audience segments and their expectations and developing suitable notes for the performer, the paper draws key lessons and conclusions.
A caution is expressed that there is an inherent conflict in the expectations or pulse of the various segments. Therefore, specific strategies are to be developed to address all these segments though it would be an almost impossible goal for a performer to offer his or her musical experience to all at all times.
In the context of strategies, the paper laments the general lack of understanding by performers, of the role he/she has to assume in his/her musical journey. For good results, there should be clarity in assessing the expectations of both the performer and audience. There should then be a consistency in purpose. Finally, environment should be well studied with reference to the role and purpose of music'. Keeping these in mind, the paper lists some initiatives.
The paper concludes that an alignment between the artiste and the audience is essential to achieve a true dialogue between them. The pulse of the audience will have to be understood, developed and improved upon over a period of time.
