Founded in the year 1959, July 7th, on the full moon day (Pournami) with the style of Sri Gnanananda Namasankeerthana Mandali at Madras by command and with the blessings of Sathguru Maharaj Sri Swami Gnanananda Giri, solely for the purpose of spreading Namasankirtanam in and around Tamil Nadu, singing the praise of the Lord with saturated devotion and inspiring songs, grew in due course with branches at Mumbai, Nagpur, Calcutta, Jaipur, Coimbatore, Madurai, Tirunelveli and other important centres.

The beacon light of the Mandali, Swami Haridos Giri with his captivating voice, and enthralling music, immersed the devotees in supreme joy, with a missionary zeal, leading the audience to identify themselves with that everlasting oneness with divine message in the wisdom of Lord's creation as propounded by His Master Sathguru Sri Gnanananda, whenever he conducts a series of musical discourses, depicting the Bhaktas of our ancient land.

In order to consolidate all the activities at a central unit, Sri Gnanananda Seva Samajam was founded in the year 1971 with the blessings of Sathguru Sri Gnanananda Giri, and registered at Madras with Swami Haridos Giri as its Chairman.

Objectives

The main objectives are :

• For the dissemination of knowledge, education and culture of Indian philosophy, with special reference to Hindu Sanathana Dharma ideals conceived by our seers and saints.
• To establish and conduct Vidyalayas, Mandalis, Sabhas and other centers of research, revival and development of Indian Philosophy, Literature, Science and Fine Arts.
• To arrange for regular lectures, group discussion by eminent persons of renown, well-versed in scriptures / philosophy and on subjects of permanent intellectual values and holding Vidwat Sadas, Seminar, Bhajans and Namasankirtans, Conferences, Fairs, Melas etc. periodically for the purpose.
• Publication of philosophical works, leaflets, periodicals, pamphlets and books of educational and cultural value.
• Establishment and maintenance of libraries for works of philosophy and culture.
• To constitute scholarship prizes and awards in such manner and through such institutions as will be most conducive to the development of Indian Literature, particularly Sanskrit and Tamil.
• To give grants and endowments to existing or new institutions, orphanages, relief centres etc. which have all or any of the objects of the Samajam.
• To acquire properties, construct and own lands and buildings for carrying on all or any of the objectives of the Trust and dealing with the said properties, rents and any profit arising therefrom.
• To provide medical relief to the poor and advancement of any objects of general utility.
• To render monetary help to individuals and institutions, with the same or similar objects of the Samajam.
• To collect and maintain a fund for the objects and purposes of the Trust and in particular to ccept donations, gifts of properties, movables and immovables, assignment of insurance policies and the like.
• To accept and make grants in money or otherwise to carry out the objects.
• To invest or deal with the funds of the Samajam upon certain securities and in such manner as may be from time to time deemed expedient by The Trustees whether in Shares or Debentures of various companies, mortgages or otherwise as the Trustees may think fit and to the Samajam.
• To do all such other lawful acts as may be necessary or incidental or conducive to the attainment of all or any of the above objects.

International

The spectacular growth of our Samajam with its arms extending the length and breadth of the world embracing several independent units, in the East at Sri Lanka, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, in the West at USA, Canada, UK, Zambia, South Africa etc. - only a symbolic projection of the grace of our Sathguru Sri Gnanananda Giri Maharaj, the sage of Thapovanam (Tirukoilur - South India).

Activities

With the guidance and inspiration of Swami Haridhos Giri we have undertaken several cultural and philanthropic activities for the benefit of the public, including mass poor feeding at all important functions.

Under the auspices of Sri Gnanananda Seva Samajam, the Aarudra Pournami Aaradhana of Sathguru Sri Gnanananda Giri is being conducted every year in a grand manner at Thennangur ( G A Trust Ashram Complex), usually witnessed by vast concourse of devotees not only from our land, but also from USA, Canada, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore etc.

The Mumbai Unit

The stressful city that Mumbai is that unabashedly consumes all energies, whether it be commercial pursuits or spiritual engagements, or philanthropic activity, and yet leaves the creativity in a person unsatiated.

For a normal citizen, the city consumes more than what it gives, and at the end of the day, the person is only in a more confused state. People tend to take to music or spiritualism - which seems to the simplistic solution to forget all the stresses, at least till such time you are involved - but alas! this bliss ends, and you are back to square one. Our revered Guruji, several years ago, introduced Namasankirtana and the Bhakti Cult in this city, and many - both old and young - could get themselves transported to a new world of eternal bliss.By participating in Bhajans, where everyone sings, whether you have a melodious voice or otherwise, whether you have musical knowledge or otherwise, whether you have a grasp of laya or otherwise.Bhajan alone satisfies your creativity, as it is a participative venture unlike a musical performance or a spiritual endeavour.

In order to inculcate the virtues of "Namasankirtana" in the city of Mumbai, especially to the younger generation, a group of young dedicated volunteers went around the city performing bhajans at several locations - sometimes even uninvited, to spread the mahima of Guruji's bhajans and to let people know about the mammoth Vithal Rukmayee Temple Complex at Tennangur, created by our Guruji - Swami Haridos Giri ( who has since attained Jalasamadhi ).

Thus was born Sri Gnanananda Seva Samajam in Mumbai.What started out as a small team of three volunteers ( Sri K. Ganesh Kumar, Sri Ravi and Sri Murali ) ended as a Samajam with over 350 members in a short span of four months.
