PT. SHIVKUMAR SHARMA Born in Jammu, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma had training in music from his father Pt. Umadutt Sharma, a learned vocalist and percussionist in his own right, a disciple of Pt. Bade Ramdasji of Banaras. Initially, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma learnt vocal music and tabla right from the tender age of 5. At his fathers request Pt. Shivkumar Sharma began extensive research on the then little known folk instrument Santoor. It achieved a breakthrough with his first performance in Mumbai in 1955. He has won a number of prestigious national and international honour including the Sangeet Natak Academy Award and the Hafiz Ali Khan Award. Apart from performing at concerts the world over, he has also released a number of LP records, cassettes and compact discs. Indeed, Pt. Shivkumar Sharma is one of the few maestros to enjoy global reputation and no major musical event is complete without his participation. |
